This novel is a recollection of short stories that follows Seadog, a misguided product of the cyberpunk revolution, as he wonders his way as a ghost through the wireless world that surrounds us all. Watch from behind the helm as he sails his ship into distant previously unknown waters plundering our network resources and looting our personal information.

RAIDING the Wireless Empire eBook Ben Nichols

I have read Mafiaboy, Ghost in the Wires, and Raiding the Wireless Empire was leaps and bounds more entertaining, suspenseful, and overall fun than the others. Not only did I find this book motivating and hopeful during my own knowledge seeking and pillaging but it taps into the curiosity and mischievousness of an aspiring "hacker". I use the term "hacker" very lightly and somewhat hesitantly as it is thrown around too often these days, but this book encompasses the very origin of that term and curious antics that brought us to where we are today. I sense a feeling of parallel when I read this book as I too have been trying to absorb all the knowledge that I can and after playing with wireless in coffee shops I landed a job working for SANS institute where I continue to soak up all the infosec knowledge I can muster. Thanks Douglas for inspiring and sharing your work with those of similar interest. If you're remotely interested in "hacker" tales and a comprehensible dose of wireless mayhem then I highly recommend you pick up this book.

RAIDING the Wireless Empire eBook Ben Nichols Reviews

The book can be taken from several different angles. You can think of it as a collection of fictitious stories about an underdog wannabe hacker that wanted to learn everything about wireless networks and even create something larger than himself that would still exist after his time roaming the seas is over. OR, you can read it as it is; an inspiring and motivating book about how anyone can achieve more than life has allowed them until now. You can learn any skills, you can explore any field and you can, no matter where you start in life, accomplish things and live a fuller life. I've bought this book with several other wireless network security books, it might not contain as much technical information but it's a great motivator. Since I've read it I've made a commitment to make sure anyone who starts in the field of information security in a company I work for reads this book. It motivates them but also gives them good insight to a real hacker's mindset.
The book is well written and very easy to read, I hope the authors publish a sequel.
Reading this book immediately brought back memories of my own experiences when going wardriving. Although my motivations had more to do with the glory and glitz of being on the wigle.net leader boards rather than digging into what was lurking beneath the SSID; Seadog shows what is possible for someone willing to take that extra step and dive head first into the ether. Seadog's technical prowess allows him to take control of various computer systems seemingly at will, yet this book explains it all in a format that's not too dense and is also quite enjoyable to read. I can't wait to find out what Seadog will do next. A few minor editing and continuity issues aside, I will be reading this book again. Raiding The Wireless Empire would make a great addition to any hacker or phreaker's personal library.
This book is a masterpiece. From as early on as the ISBN page at the front of the book, anyone involved in the world of information security, wireless networking, computer programming, security auditing, ethical hacking, and the like will quickly recognize known terms and a tone very near and dear to practioners of such arts.

The author takes readers on a very technically accurate yet vivid and lively journey alongside his younger self throughout his growth and adventures in the world of underground computer hacking. This novel can be enjoyed as much as a fictional novel for the technically literate, but does not shy from practical, real-world tools, techniques, and processes utilized all around us. Don't be mistaken, this is not an "instructional manual" of any sort, but everyone from industry vets to the new kid on the scene will learn something from this book.

Underneath the technical face of this book, several deep and meaningful messages about society, defeat, pride, alcoholism, social interaction, consumption-obsessed capitalism, romantic relationships, authority, love, hate, and other non-technical but important topics permeate their way into this novel. They are added caringly, and do not subtract from the technical tone of the book, but rather add to the setting and message of the story overall.

The book wrapped up a little quickly, but it was a deeply satisfying journey regardless, and earns 5 out of 5 stars despite that because of the quality of the plot itself. Not recommended for those under 18 for occasional language, occasionally "dark" moods and themes, and other bits of mature content, but otherwise an excellent read for anyone who enjoys the world of hacking.
So far I have only read the first few chapters of this book, and from what I have read so far, this Book is all around very good to read. Excellent in my opinion. Even if you don't understand the computing world, this book is very "noob" friendly if you will. I think everyone should have a copy of this book. I even talked my mom into reading it. This book keeps you interested, and makes you want to read more and more! I give this 5/5 Stars! Thanks go out to Doug and Ben for writing this book,
This book is interesting and informative, a definite must read. Not only for its introduction into a cyberpunk world, but also as a well written fictitious novel.
I really like the adventures of Seadog and somehow it inspired me to follow his work on wifirus. Wifirus is a good idea and I think this guy should be invited to DEFCON or ROOTCON for his demos if his work on wifirus is real because it is really plausible. Imagine thousands of botnets by just using wireless attacks.
This is an excellent book that I've read several times now and have passed it around to a few friends, who say they've enjoyed it as well. I personally have very little interest in the technical aspects of wireless networks, but the stories in this book make it a fascinating topic even for someone like me. I think everyone will enjoy the brazen activities of Seadog and the insane lengths he goes to, just to learn about networks as he pulls pranks and gets revenge on people in the process. My only complaint about this book is that it's too short.
