It's almost impossible to describe the book without giving away the many twists and turns it takes. Jeremy, the main character has lived a tough life and throughout the book, it only gets tougher - though he does manage to turn it around somewhat by the end. He's surrounded by people and events that he may or may not have interpreted correctly. The author does a good job of portraying how many things can be so different than they seem and how the truth changes life, never to be the same.

I enjoyed the book's setup of 'then' and 'now' passages. And, even though I didn't like all of the characters, I understood why, based on how well they were written.

I start so many books and don't finish them. Breaking Glass was not one of them. I think it was the writing that kept me reading. This author clearly understands her craft and employs tight, fluid prose with clever turns of phrase and surprising moments of vivid narration. Jeremy's character arc was well developed and the ending satisfying. I liked the character driven nature of this novel and look forward to the next book by this talented author.
I picked up this book not too long ago and devoured it in a matter of hours. The story is full of teen romance, teen angst, and a perfectly paced reveal of a well orchestrated mystery. Kind of like Ghost meets A Separate Peace. Loved the characters and Lisa's writing is both the perfect teen voice intersperced with eloquently pieced together imagery and beatifully crafted language, witty dialogue and a story that keeps you guessing till the final chapters. Can't wait to read what Amowitz comes out with next!!
I normally read romance novels, but have been in a rut lately with bad writing or been there, done that reads. This book definitely got me out of my rut as it was very different, but also thrilling to read an author with creativity that can keep you on your toes. It was not obvious to me who "offed" Susannah until near the end. I did figure it out, but there were so many unexpected and interesting twists that had me blown away because I didn't see it coming.
This is an interesting YA mystery with a ghostly twist. A lot of the story centers around the main character's drinking problem and dealing with and recuperating from an accident that causes him to lose his leg. The story has enough characters and twists to the story to keep you guessing how it will end. The writing style is a little different. The plot constantly moves from the present to the past -- little by little telling you about the characters and how they relate to each other. And most of the plot is written in first person from the main character's point of view. This didn't keep me up all night to finish it, but it was a good read.
I have a bit of eye strain this morning because I stayed up late last night reading Breaking Glass. I simply could not put this amazingly wonderful book down. The author Lisa Amowitz has incorporated just about everything required of a truly great novel.

Jeremy Glass, the main character, narrates the story. He craves drink after losing his leg in an accident and the girl he thinks he loves goes missing. Though deeply depressed he is determined to solve the mystery of Susannah's disappearance.

Aside from a brilliantly intriguing plot the voice of each character is real and strong. Though complex, the novel is easy to follow because of a logical flow of words and a unique literary devise that the author uses flashbacks introduced by two simple words reducing any chance of confusion the words are "then"and "now".

In addition, the novel is beautifully written with poetic metaphors adding poignancy to the descriptions of people and events.

I highly recommend Breaking Glass. Out of five stars I would give this fantastic novel six.
When I read the first paragraph and discovered the book was written in first person present tense, I nearly put it down, as that is my least favorite style of writing. It is difficult to write and difficult to read. I changed my mind and decided to give it the first chapter to convince me it was worth the effort.

I'm so glad I did. I could barely put the book down. It is a gripping tale of power, conquest, mystery, and metaphysical horror that kept me enthralled right up to the reveal and resolution.

Amowitz has a distinctive voice with beautiful turns of phrase and a has created a world so vivid you feel you are experiencing the events first hand. I highly recommend Breaking Glass.
I just finished reading "Breaking Glass" by the new author Lisa Amowitz. It was brilliantly written and the story was compelling. The suspense kept on building up as I turned each page. Lisa's story line flowed together like smooth glass, no pun attempted. From the very first page where I was introduced to the main characters and throughout the book I was enthralled and couldn't put the book down until the climaxmatic story unfolded towards the end when everything was revealed. Lisa is my cousin and I was one of the first people that read one of her first stories. I am so very proud of her. Not only is she a very talented designer and professor of design at a prestigious college, now she is a celebrated author of a new and incredible book that I loved every minute I spent reading and I have already recommended this book to several friends of mine they will love reading it.
