Wanda Lane has had a string of bad luck. More accurately, Wanda made a series of bad decisions that have landed her in a very bad place. The one bright spot is Walter, a lawyer who lends her a hand and offers her his heart. But before Wanda can even contemplate a happy future, she feels like she needs to put her miserable past to rest. Wanda's journey of self-discovery is poignant, frustrating and - best of all - hilarious.

You know how sometimes it takes quite a while to get into a book? Well, this was NOT one of those stories. Right from the start I was captivated by Wanda's first person narrative and her biting, sarcastic humor. Wanda is a little...well, trashy is the word that comes to mind. She drinks too much, she's rude and frankly Wanda is her own worst enemy. As the story moves along we learn why Wanda acts the way she does, and there's a surprisingly dark side to this otherwise light and funny story.

As much as I enjoyed this, there came a point where Wanda got to be just too much. Too much sarcasm, too much self-pity and too much all around "woe is me" behavior. Frankly, I found it hard to believe that a man like Walter would even be interested in her in the first place, never mind be willing to put up with all her baggage. Overall it was an entertaining story and I would recommend it for the humor, not for the romance. Walter's character is too vague and insubstantial to be a plausible romantic interest for the hot mess that is Wanda.

"And then Bill O'Reilly came on, and I realized the whole world was a bottomless pit of crap, just like I'd always known" - Wanda Lane

Time Off For Good Behavior edition by Lani Diane Rich Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

At first, I detested Wanda. She was loud, profane and obnoxious, stomping through her life with a chip the size of a sequoia on her shoulder, terrorizing everyone around her. I thought Wanda was going to be a slightly more literate version of Bobbi Faye, the jinxed trailer trash heroine of Toni McGee Causey's trilogy. I was wrong.

Wanda is badly injured in an accident and winds up in a coma. When Wanda comes to, her life falls apart. She loses her job. Her loser, abusive ex is coming back to see her. And to cap it off, she's turned down by a really, really nice guy. Instead of foul-mouthing and wise-cracking her way through the rest of her life, Wanda takes a serious look at her life, with the help of friends and acquaintances, and tries to get to the roots of why she is this way and what she can do to improve things. That's when I started to like Wanda. She is just as confused about things as the rest of us. She doesn't have all the answers, she can't tell you how to fix it, but she's darned sure going to give it a try.

This is an outstanding book, well written, with likable characters and a story that hangs together well. You'll wind up liking Wanda. A lot.
I really contemplated quitting this book at first and I never do that! Wanda was just so negative and immature (she uses words like butt munch and skeeze-ball). She is definitely a different kind of character that had to grow on me. Basically, we meet Wanda at rock bottom, so it could only get better from there. Boy, does it! Wanda's journey in this book is amazing. With the help of Walter, Elizabeth, Kacey, Alex, and a Catholic priest, Wanda gets her life together, one post-it at a time. By the end, I was totally rooting for her and happy that she found peace.

A few minor things bugged me. Walter was entirely too smitten from the get go. Possibly due to his own past, but it was still hard to believe. I felt like Elizabeth & Jack needed a heart to heart that never came. I also wish Wanda could have gotten better closure with her ex. Without spoiling anything, I just felt like as strong as she became, she never really got to properly confront her fear of him.

This book is different from others I've read by Lani Diane Rich, but definitely worth reading. Her style and humor come through. I have a couple of her other books on my that I am looking forward to reading.
May be the book for you if you like the female lead to be obnoxious, foul mouthed, self centered and amoral. Cause that's what you'll get. Walter is a nice, smart guy who falls for her. Totally unbelievable. I kept telling him he could do much better. I gave it 1 star because the writing is well done. I did finish the book. I give myself 5 stars for that.
I have to say I really enjoyed Wanda and all of her Idiosyncrasies. Honestly, the woman is just a little crazy for most of the book and the situations she finds herself in are patently absurd. So you do just kind of have to role with it to a certain extent. I think her terse relationship with Father Hard-Ass is my favourite. There is so much witty sarcasm, what someone else called snark, in this book that I couldn't help but be constantly amused.

True conversation
My husband sauntered into the living-room chuckling.
Me "What?"
Him "Nothing. I'm just laughing at you sitting there grinning to yourself."
Me (waving my at him indignantly) "But it's funny."
Him (shaking his head knowingly) "I'm sure it is."
Me (lovingly to his departing back) "B*stard"

Yep, that's how it goes. Wanda's journey of self-discovery is one I think a lot of women can relate to. If we're all as lucky as her and can finally come to not only understand but accept ourselves life will surely improve. Of course she is helped along by a whole cadre of new friends and one AMAZING new love interest. Yes, Walter (aka Jimmy Stewart) is just far too good to be true. So of course it's impossible not to love him. It only took me an evening to read the book and I'm glad I gave it the time.
