The Doctor and the Assassin edition by Lietha Wards Romance eBooks Reviews
I am having a hard time understanding the 5 star reviews and would be curious to know what other people are reading. Certainly, romance books shouldn't be compared to Shakespeare, but if this book is the best you have read then I would encourage you to look to Kristen Ashley, Jeaniene Frost, Karen Marie Moning, Lisa Marie Rice, J.R. Ward.
Readers are expected to be able to suspend their disbelief is the author does a good enough job. I think it is great that Ms. Wards has created a different type of alpha male in this story. She even manages to make Nick, a cold-blood killer, appealing. What is also enjoyable is to have a strong female, Jordan, who is a feisty doctor.
I have two issues. One is how quickly Jordan is able to put away all her values to be with Nick. For someone who has NEVER had any exposure to the "mob" or violence she seems to become a part of that lifestyle very quickly.
The happily ever after in this book is WAY over the top. It would have been great see this novel end in a happy, but more realistic, fashion.
I wish Ms. Wards was able to get some sort of editing support before being published.
3.5 stars because this story doesn`t follow the scenario of many of her others, but believability is an issue.
I will admit that I prefer the hero doing the chasing as opposed to the heroine. Unfortunately that was not the case here. The heroine, Jordan was constantly pursuing the hero Nick. I felt like they were together because he gave into her.
Jordan flirts with Nick a lot when meeting him. She tells him how much she wants him, how taken she is with him, and how crazy she is about him, on multiple occasions when she sees him before they even go out. He never calls her and so she just shows up at his apartment, with a cup of coffee, asking to come in. Apparently the coffee was cold because she stood outside his apartment for a long time. When she goes into his apartment they almost have smex but then he get a phone call. He tells her that it was a mistake them being together and then leaves her, basically kicking her out of his apartment. In fact he tells her on multiple occasions that it was not a good time for him to be with her or they should not be together but she doesn't care, she keeps pursuing him with minimum encouragement from him. Nick goes for weeks without calling Jordan and she either calls him or puts up with it. She then tells him that she loves hims, when they did not even know each other very well. Scary. Nick claims to be crazy about her but it is all telling and no showing. He says it but doesn't ever back up his words with actions. In fact, never the end of the story, they had a falling out and she is the one who again, came to him even though I believe that her response to the thing that caused the separation was reasonable. She just came off needy and pathetic and it sadden me.
Too long. And such a drag. This is horrible.
*** there may be some spoilers ***
The premise of the book was interesting. You have an assassin who works for the US government and the mob. Hmmm... May be impossible but probable enough to suspend disbelief. Then you have a young genius gorgeous doctor who is naive about her looks and impact on men, practically a virgin, kind, rich, and compassionate mayor's daughter. Basically, your perfect female specimen. Possible? Hmmm... Near impossible but ok, I'll suspend disbelief some more. Then you have the mob with all that it implies. Plus a glimpse of the machinations of the US government. And you add a serial killer stalker. An obsessed cop. And a mentally and physically abused sister who becomes mistress to the mob boss just a month after becoming a widow. And, I almost forgot, you have a newly realized half-brother to the mob boss and assassin. All these in one book.
But ok. It's a book with a little over 250 pages. So sure, you can squeeze it all in. NOT.
Really NOT. Unless you shortchange other areas. And that's what happened here. You have this long drag out about how gorgeous she is or how hot he is then you get a couple of paragraphs of deux ex machina which is called LOVE. Like it solves everything. I'm sure it does. But the author failed to explain it better. The ending feels hurried. It closes all the loops, yes. But it feels like the author got tired of writing and just wants it to be over with. All Tied with a neat bow.
Perhaps I'm not explaining myself well. But really, I'm surprised at all the positive reviews. Don't get me wrong, I've read way more books that sucked more. But I guess I just expected more from LE. The ending is just too pat. The heroine is really not likable - way too insecure and fickle for me. One minute she's ok with his job. Then not. Even when faced with horrible people who really deserve to die. Even when she was faced with her own death. And even when she made the same threats. It's a moral compass that's too shaky. And annoying. And exhausting. I'm tired. Final word--- I would say this book should only be worth a dollar.
