Trafficking Powell Book 1 eBook Bill Ward
Lets be clear from the outset, this book deals with Human Trafficking; with all its inherent violence, degradation and shattering control over freedom, using fear and pain to reach those objectives. It is not a comfortable topic, but the Author doesn’t try and pretty it up for generic consumption, he tackles it head on with great empathy, revealing the utter degradation that keeps these girls silent, dis-empowered, and often forgotten.
The characters aren’t so much written, as they are etched, with a light touch, this author has beautifully drawn each of the central figures, with layers after layer of pain, and anger just simmering as an intensely volatile brew just beneath the surface.
Author Bill Ward gives us Afina, he shows us her fragility, her desperation, her fear, yet her grants her a defiant will, lest we become too complacent and write her off to the dirt of the lifestyle she was forced into.
This author makes us care about his characters including their imperfections.
Powell is a man driven by revenge. His daughter is dead, he seeks retribution, whatever it takes to achieve it.
His child died whilst attempting to save Afina. He wants Afina protected to make his child’s death count for something.
We understand the demons that drive him.
The author weaves his web carefully, constructing its threads and leading us forward, in this relentlessly fast-paced explosion of a book.
If you enjoy uncompromising thrillers, this book is for you.
As for me … I’m off to grab book 2.

Trafficking Powell Book 1 eBook Bill Ward Reviews
The central character in my novel "The White Amah" is kidnapped by an International prostitution ring and so when I found out that one of my favourite authors had written a book on the topic I immediately clicked on buy now.
""Trafficking" is the introductory novel in a crime fighting series by Bill Ward, an accomplished crime writer. In book one, the daughter of Powell, a retired government operative, is fatally stabbed coming to the assistance of a Romanian girl fleeing from the gangster/pimp who enslaved her. The former top agent vows to track down her killer. His investigations take him into the world of the world of sexual slavery.
He soon finds out that in the world of female trafficking, villainous pimps will stop at nothing to subjugate their victims.
In "The White Amah" I just touched on the topic, but Bill Ward was not so timid. His disturbing shocker "Trafficking" provides explicit insights
into the corrupt practices and warped minds of venal monsters. Reading it was utterly absorbing. I couldn't put it down.
I reached for Bill Ward's Trafficking aware that the book won't be an easy read. Still, the first few pages made me gasp of disbelief a human being can do such awful things to another human being. I know what trafficking is about but never got so deep into the matter. Bill Ward forced me to face the ugliest and dirtiest secrets of the contemporary women slavery happening right beside us.
The main character, Afina, a Romanian girl seeking a better future, decides to leave her country and heads for the UK where someone promised her a decent job--a story I've heard several times about the girls from Poland where I come from. However, upon arrival, Stefan, the alleged good friend, takes her passport and later on ... Let's skip the details of how Afina becomes a sex slave. Whenever I recall it I shiver.
Afina is not losing her hope and when the opportunity emerges escapes the brothel. As she runs for the freedom she bumps at the persons who pushes her (figuratively) towards Powell--another leading character developed in an outstanding way. As soon as the lives of Afina and Powell intertwine the novel gains another dimension and the pace speeds up so much I was surprised when the book was over.
Trafficking is not only a very good thriller but also an important eye-opening read for those who had no idea slavery isn't over yet. The plot is amazing yet I still remember the very first pages where Afina's naivety and hope to support her family lead her to Stefan's filthy apartment.
Trafficking is the first book in the series. If you asked me if I want to read more I'd say yes. And if you're looking for a striking thriller I strongly recommend this novel.
I wish Powell had been introduced far earlier in this crime story, and the investigation had been developed in a broader and more exploratory context. I understand that sex scenes are a necessary part of the story, but I also think that there are too many gratuitous and pointlessly graphic sex passages required for a piece that advertises itself as a cautionary tale against trafficking. It is almost as if the author couldn’t decide if he was writing a piece of pure erotica or a thriller in which sexually explicit material is an indispensable component. The author’s lack of commitment one way or the other came through to me strongly and made me question the underlying purpose of this story.
If structured undeniably as a cautionary tale, this book might have emerged as required reading for all impressionable and/or headstrong young persons, one that if taken to heart, might help to arm them against falling victim to traffickers. But the needless sex scenes in this book, as well as the parts in which the young girl enjoys rather than detests what is happening to her, paint a picture a shade too rosy in this business of trafficking, and are the handholds romantic and hormone-surged young readers might latch onto, and thereby keep them from going all the way to being scared stiff by it. Whether it is a cautionary tale or one bent on generating sexual arousal is up to the individual reader to decide. Nevertheless, the book does go to great lengths to shine a light on a pervasive worldwide problem. For that reason alone, as well as for the crisp writing style the author employs in this book, it deserves a rating of 4 stars.
