This is on my son's reading list for high school. Couldn't resist getting into it and seeing what it was like. It's an absolutely gorgeous read. I was laughing and crying all the way through. The main character, Candice Phee, is utterly charming and at times exhausting. I reckon she has Aspergers and ADHD. We never find out what her diagnosis is. A friend's mum says Candice has Autism and Candice denies it. Her classmates call her "Essen", which is S.N., short for Special Needs.
But that's merely a side issue. Candice is set an assignment to write a about herself, with each paragraph being a letter of the alphabet. She delivers so much more (and therefore apologises for how late the assignment is). Candice not only has an assignment, she has a big task ahead. She needs to help George Benson from Another Dimension get 'home', she has to mend the deepening rift between her father and her uncle, she needs to help her mother get out of bed. The mum brought me to tears. She has almost-crippling depression and I could absolutely see myself following that path if my life had turned out a little differently.
You will absolutely need boxes and boxes of tissues as well, because there are some moments here of such utter heartbreak. I fell to bits. That's how wonderfully powerful - and yet charmingly honest - the writing was.
Thank you Barry Jonsberg for a gorgeous read. And congratulations for having a sensational book on the school reading list here in Australia.
