I am so aggravated with this book - if you skip over the parts where "Moo" just kind of rambles (and there is LOTS of this), the book is actually quite good. Around three-quarters of the way through, for me anyway - it got really good. As many others have written, the book is about an overweight 15 year old boy who is bullied at school. Because he doesn't have many friends, he spends a lot of his time at a local "bridge" - not a bridge for cars, but a "walking" bridge. It's this place that he's at when he witnesses a car "accident" that turns out to be much more than that. Moo is then questioned by the police, and he is mightily confused when some of these policemen would like him to tell the truth, while others would rather he embellished upon his story a bit. I'll leave it at that, as I don't like to add spoilers, but one HUGE spoiler I am going to add is that this book HAS NO ENDING. You get REALLY interested in this book, as I did, and then, as I was getting closer to the end - say, four to five pages away - I said to myself, something better happen soon here.. I don't see how this is going to end in the few pages that are left. And then... it just ENDS. The reader is left completely up in the air as to how things turn out, and this to me is pure BS. I don't (purposely, anyway) take time out of my day(s) to read books that end like this... it actually made me want to toss the book at the wall - and I'm usually quite easy-going! If you don't mind books or movies that leave it up to you to figure out how the story might end, then this book won't bother you like it did me. But if you're like me, and you actually like the author to add an ending onto their story, then don't bother with this one - it'll just make you mad!Tags : Amazon.com: Kissing The Rain (9780439577434): Kevin Brooks: Books,Kevin Brooks,Kissing The Rain,Push,0439577438,Law & Crime,Social Themes - Emotions & Feelings,Social Themes - Violence,Bullying;Juvenile fiction.,Emotional problems of teenagers;Juvenile fiction.,Overweight persons;Juvenile fiction.,Bullying,Children's Books - Young Adult Fiction,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 7-9),Emotional problems of teenagers,JUVENILE FICTION Social Themes Adolescence,Juvenile fiction,Overweight persons,Social Issues - General,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,Young Adult Fiction Law & Crime,Young Adult Fiction Social Themes Emotions & Feelings,Young Adult Fiction Social Themes Violence
Kissing The Rain Kevin Brooks Books Reviews
This book is about this boy named Moo who witnessed a car crash. This car crash also led to a murder. Moo is one of those boys who always get made fun of because he is fat, and never gats any attention at all. Everyone who knows about the crash and murder (including the bad guys) want Moo to talk to them and tell them every single detail that he saw. Moo won't do that; he likes all the attention that he can get, whether it is negative or positive. The guy who is getting charged with the murder hired some professionals to try to get Moo to change his statement about him. You will have to read the book to see if the bad guys can get Moo to change his mind about his statement.
I didn't like this book because I thought that it didn't take off, and get interesting fast enough. I don't have a good enough attention span for these types of books.
I would recommend this book to readers who like all types of books, and don't judge a book by its cover.
Kissing The Rain is a book about tough decisions. The book's main character is Micheal "Moo" Nelson. Moo is 15 years old, extremely overweight, he gets picked on and bullied (rained) on. His only friend is another outcast who is a midget although they don't really admit they are friends for a bit. Moo likes to get away from it all by going to a foot bridge and watching the traffic pass underneath(highway). Moo goes here often just to escape he calls the bridge, that section of the highway his. One day while Moo is at the bridge he witness road rage by two cars, and one of the guys ends up being killed. Moo is the only witness so both the defense and prosecution (and even the defendant) are pulling him and telling him that he must do this or else. It gets confusing for Moo because he doesn't know what he should do this or that , truth or lie.
The book did take a few chapters to get into but then it became really interesting. The way the book ends is sort of frustrating/sort of open ended so if you don't like books like that then this probably wouldn't be the best fit. All in all it was an enjoyable book I can relate to Moo during school I was often picked on not because of weight but just because I was different. The book is also good about making one think. What would they do if they were Moo or in his situation? Things in life aren't always cut and paste. Its not always good vs bad it can be bad vs. bad or good vs. good.
A most interesting book. The author depicts a 15-year-old boy, vastly overweight, who is the butt of ridicule that he calls "rain" in school. With no friends, he spends every day after school on a bridge above a busy highway where he observes vehicles race beneath him. His knowledge of cars is extensive and he loves this place which he can claim as his own. However, his life changes when late one afternoon he views what appears to be a road rage incident only to realize that he has seen a murder. The accused murderer is a famous gangster who has been set up by others to take the fall. The gangster is a cruel man who deserves to take the fall but the boy knows that he did not murder this man even though he has killed many others. Moo, as his school mates call Mike, truthfully tells his story to the police. He becomes a sought after witness that both the police and the gangster seek to influence. One of the policemen is determined to pin the murder on the gangster, visiting Mike again and again to convince him so. The gangster threatens him and his family. I found getting into the mind of a 15-year-old difficult at first but as the story progressed I empathized with this insecure boy who has suddenly become center of attention. When he bursts into tears on the witness stand I cried with him. I'm not sure that I liked the ending but it was certainly in keeping with the character. Brooks does a remarkable job of telling the story from Mike's perspective from beginning to end.
